Have a sense of form and artistry
Should get along well with people
Should be willing to follow customers’ instructions
Should be aware of customers’ preferences
Have patience and an even temper
Be able to tolerate long intervals standing
Not be allergic to the chemicals they use in their work


All states require cosmetologists to have a license to practice
In Michigan:
Applicants must be at least seventeen years old
Must have completed 1500 hours of training
Must also pass a written and practical exam
